Fall in Kentucky

The coming of fall means the coming of fall festivals and cool nights around a fire.  Days spent working and evenings hanging out with family and friends.  Weekends full of activities with the kids and sitting around the TV watching football.  So what is there to do in Kentucky in the fall?  This list is just a few things that can get you out and spending a day with the family.

1. Pick apples at an orchard.
Kentucky isn’t hurting for any number of orchards you can go to.  If you are in or visiting the Lexington, KY area, I would suggest checking out Reed’s Valley Orchard between Cynthiana and Paris, Evan’s Orchard in Georgetown or Boyd’s Orchard in Versailles.  All of these are great orchards.  My favorite is Reed’s Valley Orchard though.

2. Attend a fall festival.
We just went to the Midway fall festival recently, however, throughout the fall in Kentucky, there are many fall festivals.  Berea has the Spoonbread Festival, Beattyville has the Woolly Worm Festival, and in Lawrenceburg there’s the Anderson County Burgoo Festival.  Don’t forget to have money on hand.

3. Go camping
Fall is a good time to go camping because it’s cooler and you can enjoy the beauty of Kentucky.  There are 31 campgrounds in Kentucky.  The Red River Gorge is beautiful in the fall and has many hiking trails.  Take a day and visit Natural Bridge.  This is one of my very favorite spots.  And it seems extra beautiful in the fall when all the leaves are changing.

4. Go to Keeneland and enjoy a day at the races.
One of the things that Kentucky is known for is horses and horse racing.  Keeneland is right here in Lexington, KY and is a great place to spend a day or a weekend.  During the Fall Meet, they have a lot of fun stuff going on for families as well.

5. Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill
Visit Shaker Village.  In addition to learning about the history of the Shakers, they have a fall festival and other fun activities through the fall season.  You can even turn it into a vacation and reserve a room there for the night.

6. McConnell Springs
McConnell Springs is a good place to visit any time through the year, but especially in the fall.  They frequently have activities and learning opportunities there plus it’s just beautiful in the fall season.

7. Bluegrass Railroad Museum
The Bluegrass Railroad Museum offers Pumpkin Patch train rides every weekend in October.  This is a fun thing you can do with your kids on a weekend, however you need to book ahead of time because seats run out quickly.

8. Go to Lake Cumberland
Enjoy a day or a weekend on the lake.  You can even take Whitewater Kayaking classes!  You can also turn it into a camping trip and again enjoy all the beauty that Kentucky has to offer.

9. Did someone say Corn Maze?
Visit Devine’s Corn Maze for a fun family day.  My kids have done this and love it!  It’s one of their favorite places to go.  They also have an area for the kids to play and a petting zoo.

10. Visit Salato Wildlife Center
This is another of my kids favorite places to go.  They have indoor and outdoor exhibits showing the different wildlife in Kentucky.  You can also fish while there.
